Since I was a young boy (old enough to handle a firearm safely), I've grown up using a Model 70 .270 Win. Why? Because that was the first centerfire rifle I received, it's a dependable gun and because it's all I need for whitetail hunting in South Carolina. I continue to use this exact same gun today.
What caliber rifle do you prefer using when hunting whitetails, antelope and other wild game of this size? And why?
I agree with the .270. It was my first deer caliber and one I still use today. My next choice would be a .280, just because I happen to have one I've had really good luck with.
ReplyDeleteI prefer 7mm-08 with Winchester ammunition. I've had very good results with this combination over the past few years. If I do my part, the tracking job is usually less than 50 yards! And it's not a high-recoiling caliber.
ReplyDeleteBoth are excellent choices. I'm surprised no one has said 30-06 yet.
ReplyDeleteI'm a 7mm08 girl as well, though the 30-06 has served me well over the years, too.
ReplyDeleteI used a 20ga pump gun with #4 buckshot for years and it worked quite nicely on NC swamp deer. I grew into a 30-30, and then a .243 (my all-time favorite from a treestand).
ReplyDeleteNowadays, the majority of my deer hunting on both coasts and in between is done with my old Savage 30-06 (loaded with Winchester 180gr ETips, by the way).
